Capabilities

Since its founding in 1986, the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC) has served as a principal institutional resource, identifying the needs of the nation related to language competence, analyzing national capacity to meet those needs, and developing and modeling strategies for aligning capacity with needs.

  • The NFLC focuses on research and policy to provide a proper context for decisions about foreign language resource allocation and program implementation.

  • The NFLC remains independent from any vested constituency and, thus, free to pursue programs tailored exclusively to the needs of program users.

  • The NFLC's multidisciplinary team consists of foreign language professionals, project managers, instructional designers, and educational technology experts, who are all united around a common purpose.

  • Over the last decade, the NFLC has worked directly with major institutions in the educational sector and with the U.S. government to develop needed infrastructure for increasing the capacity of the U.S. to produce language-competent Americans.
