Dr. Frederick H. (Rick) Jackson is Senior Research Associate at the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland, where he is Principal Investigator for the federally funded Read Arabic and Read Chinese development projects and serves on the STARTALK Advisory Board. He served from 1985-2006 at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute (FSI), where he directed language training for Foreign Service Officers in 18 different language programs, including Chinese, German, Hebrew, and Thai. At FSI, he also founded and coordinated for eight years the school-wide program for teacher training and faculty development. From 1999-2006, he served as Coordinator and Chair of the federal Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR). Prior to joining FSI, he taught at the University of Hawai'i, the Pennsylvania State University, and Chiangmai University in Thailand. He served in the Peace Corps in Thailand from 1966 to 1969. Dr. Jackson has authored or co-authored two books and several articles, and he has made numerous presentations at such conferences as ACTFL, TESOL, AAAL, LSA, the Georgetown Roundtable and the National Conference on the Less Commonly Taught Languages. He has served as president of the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages from 1999-2002 and as president of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages in 1991-93. From 2003-2006, he was chair of the Less Commonly Taught Languages Special Interest Group for ACTFL. He has chaired the citizens’ Foreign Language Advisory Committee for the Arlington, Virginia, Public Schools since 2006. |
