Continuing a decade-long tradition of advancing the nation's capacity in critical languages, the National Council of Organizations of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL) has made available at its CouncilNet website The Polish Language Learning Framework (PLLF), authored by Leonard A. Polakiewski, Joanna Radwanski-Williams and Waldemar Walczyfski. The PLLF is the most recently released of a number of language learning frameworks developed under the auspices of NCOLCTL during the 1990s. The frameworks provide guidelines to better facilitate, promote, and coordinate the teaching and learning of critical languages in the United States. The PLLF provides (1) a survey and assessment of the current state of Polish teaching and learning, (2) a framework of theoretical and pedagogical guidelines for Polish language learning, with a survey and assessment of existing methods and materials, and (3) recommendations to further facilitate the teaching and learning of Polish in the United States. "The PLLF makes a strong statement about the viability of Polish as a language in the nation's colleges and schools," according to Scott McGinnis, Executive Director of NCOLCTL." McGinnis further commented that "the PLLF indicates that the prospects for Polish language teaching and learning in the United States are cautiously optimistic, but require a coordination of effort and information in order to make best use of existing resources and materials."
