Monday, September 10, 2001
NFLC director, Richard D. Brecht, today announced the appointment to the Center's staff of Bernard Spolsky. A professor of English at Bar-Ilan University and a scholar noted for his work on language policy, second language acquisition, and language testing, Spolsky has been appointed a senior associate in the NFLC.
During a distinguished career Spolsky has authored or co-authored more than 20 major monographs on language policy, assessment, second language acquisition, bilingual education, and sociolinguistics. In addition he founded Israel's leading center on language issues, the Language Policy Research Center. Spolsky is a recipient of the Modern Language Association's Kenneth Mildenburger Prize and the annual book prize of the British Association of Applied Linguistics for his volume, "Conditions of Second Language Learning."
Referencing Spolsky's prior association with the NFLC as a Mellon Fellow, a senior research fellow, and an adjunct fellow, Director Brecht commented, "Bernard Spolsky brings to our permanent, resident staff his wealth of knowledge and experience in the critical issues facing the US with regard to language. We are delighted and honored that he has accepted this senior associate appointment." Brecht's announcement indicated that Professor Spolsky will split his professional time between his work in Israel and commitments in the U.S., including his role at the NFLC.
