Senior Associate for LangNet Appointed

The NFLC has welcomed Dr. Gerald E. Lampe as a new senior associate responsible for managing the various components of the LangNet project. Lampe comes to the Center from the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) where he was long active in managing and supervising language programs and was a faculty member teaching Arabic and Islamic studies. He began his duties at NFLC on September 1, 2000.
Lampe's main focus will be the LangNet project. However he will be engaged in other NFLC activities as well, including the Heritage Language Intitiative and the project to enhance the infrastructure for learning of critical languages. Lampe brings extensive experience and expertise regarding study abroad and occupationally-specific language instruction, having served for 11 years as director of the Center for Arabic Study Abroad and as the founder and current director of the Center for Occupationally-Specific Language Training and Internships Abroad. He also serves as president of the Shaybani Society of International Law and is an advisor to such organizations as the USDA Graduate School, the National Capital Council of Language Resource Centers and the Tangier American Legation Museum Society.
A translator, interpreter, and consultant for the US Department of State, public and private organizations, and the White House, Lampe has been actively involved in the development of pre-college programs in Arabic and other less commonly taught languages for more than two decades. His most recent publications include the SAIS Arabic Reader in International Affairs and a CD-ROM entitled Al-Qaari' Ad Dawi ("The International Reader"), co-authored with Samia Montasser. Released in 1998, the book and the CD are in wide use throughout the world by specialists in international affairs, business, and finance.
