NFLC has begun implementation of a new grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. NEH is funding an NFLC website project supporting heritage language and culture study for US Latino students.

The initial grant from NEH for the project is in the amount of $175,000, with the opportunity for an additional $35,000 in matching funds. NFLC will develop a web-based resource for the teaching of Spanish language and Hispanic and Latino cultures to Spanish-speaking students throughout the US. The resource will serve Spanish teachers of this growing student population (and teachers of other subjects as well).

In expressing appreciation for the NEH support, NFLC Director Richard Brecht noted that "the goal of the new NFLC project is to enhance in significant ways the ability of local educators at all levels to provide sound, effective, and appropriate language and culture programming for this important group of students."

Building on the outcomes of a range of successful projects and institutes supported by NEH, FIPSE, and others, the project will create a central point on the web through which teachers of Spanish language and culture can find guidance and support. The web site will also provide teachers the best available teaching and learning resources to understand and develop their students' Spanish language capabilities and their cultural competencies. This knowledge will address the students' own culture and other Hispanic cultures in the context of other cultures of the US today.

The project will extend from May 2000 through May 2002.
