Summer Programs for Students of Arabic
Arlington Public Schools Arlington, VA Summer Exploratory and Enrichment for Arabic Dates: July 9 - July 27 http://www.arlington.k12.va.usTwo courses will be offered: one exploratory, and one maintenance and enrichment for those who have completed Arabic I, helping to expand, enhance, and support the existing courses offered during the school year.
Beloit College Beloit, WI A Lifetime of Adventure: Summer Intensive Arabic Language Study at Beloit Dates: June 9 - August 10 (nine-week) Dates: June 9 July 11 (4.5-week option) http://www.summerlanguages.com
This residential program offers talented high school students (age 17 and above) the opportunity to complete a year's worth of college-level language training in nine weeks (a semester's worth in the 4.5-week option). Our model features superb instructors, 25 hours per week of classroom study, an integrated approach to language and culture, and a variety of extracurricular activities. Competitive scholarships cover the cost of tuition, with scholarship recipients responsible for the cost of housing and meals.

Two- and four-week scholarships are available for 40 high school students to participate in the Arabic Language Village. Both Programs are cultural- and language-immersion settings for beginning to advanced speakers.
Howard Community College Columbia, MD Intensive Critical Language Learning Experience for County High School Students Dates: June 18 - August 9 STARTALK at Howard Community College
Thirty high school students will be taught Modern Standard Arabic through a variety of techniques to develop skills in listening, speaking, writing, and reading and will receive 8 college credits for the 8-week program.

Brigham Young University Provo, UT BYU Summer Arabic Camp Dates: July 23 - August 17 http://asiane.byu.edu/arabicThree apprentice teachers will work closely with a master teacher over the length of the program while twelve high school students complete the equivalent of BYU's Arabic 101 course. A three-day seminar will be held for at least seven other teachers.

The TPD program provides a four-week pedagogy-based professional development for teachers of Arabic language to introduce traditional and contemporary considerations for effective curriculum planning, design and development as applied to teaching Arabic in the U.S.

A cohort of 20 Arabic teachers will gather from across the United States for a two-week course that links the best practices in second language education with the innovative immersion techniques used at Concordia Language Villages for over 45 years. Teachers will earn four semester hours of graduate credit through Concordia College. Program participants will have the opportunity to both observe and interact with students and staff at the Arabic Language Village.

Conducted in Arabic by Iman Hashem, California State University, Long Beach, and Muhammad Eissa, Ph.D., University of Chicago. In this five-day intensive institute participants will learn how to design instruction for Arabic K-12 students which incorporates ACTFL proficiency guidelines and the National Standards for Arabic. Participants will be guided in preparing student-centered, standards-based instruction for their classrooms.

A Hands-On Workshop Conducted in Arabic by Mahmoud Al-Batal, University of Texas and Martha Schulte-Nafeh, University of Arizona. Through demonstrations, video, discussion, and interactive activities, participants will experience the methods of learner-centered, proficiency-based instruction. The presenters will demonstrate best practices by micro-teaching with small groups of university students, and participants will practice learner-centered instruction with coaching and feedback from the presenters.

Conducted in English and Arabic by Iman Hashem, California State University, Dr. Muhammad Eissa, University of Chicago, and Dr. Christine Brown, Glastonbury Public Schools. The goal of this institute is to provide guidelines and frameworks for curriculum development and specifically to assist teachers develop standards-based curricula, units and lesson plans for Arabic for their schools, programs, or districts. The institute will give participants the opportunity to share their ideas, frustrations, and solutions with each other under the guidance of expert curriculum developers experienced in Arabic language curriculum development at a variety of levels and for various ages.
