Summer Programs for Students of Chinese
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and Chinese Language Association for Elementary and Secondary Schools (CLASS) Glastonbury, CT and Wallingford, CT ACTFL/CLASS Discovering Chinese Summer Initiative for Students Dates: July 2 - July 27 http://www.actfl.orgOral and written proficiency / cultural knowledge will progress significantly after an intensive four-week instructional program as measured by pre-and post-interviews and written tests.
Arlington Public Schools Summer Exploratory and Enrichment for Chinese Dates: July 9 - July 27 http://www.arlington.k12.va.us
Two courses will be offered: one exploratory and one maintenance and enrichment for those who have completed Chinese I, helping to expand, enhance, and support the existing courses offered during the school year.

This residential program offers talented high school students (age 17 and above) the opportunity to complete a year's worth of college-level language training in nine weeks. Our model features superb instructors, 25 hours per week of classroom study, an integrated approach to language and culture, and a variety of extracurricular activities. Competitive scholarships cover the cost of tuition, with scholarship recipients responsible for the cost of housing and meals.

The SLI program creates an opportunity for 20 students currently enrolled in high school Chinese Level 3 to continue their linguistic and cultural studies during Summer 2007 in a university setting in preparation for AP / Chinese Level 4.

The Chinese Summer Immersion Academy at China Institute will offer a head start in Chinese to 20 selected New York metro-area high school students with no prior Chinese language background. The Academy will take place from 9:30-3:30, 5 days a week. Equivalent to one semester of high school Chinese, it will emphasize oral commmunication while also introducing learners to Chinese reading and writing, and to the richness of Chinese culture.

Sixty high school students with no previous experience in Chinese will learn Mandarin Chinese through total immersion in a sports camp where Chinese martial arts and ping-pong will be taught in Mandarin Chinese by People's Republic of China national-level champions in the sports.

Thirty high school students will be taught Mandarin Chinese (simplified) through a variety of techniques to develop skills in listening, speaking, writing, and reading and will receive 8 college credits for the 8-week program.

A cohort of 20 Chinese teachers will gather from across the United States for a two-week course that links the best practices in second language education with the innovative immersion techniques used at Concordia Language Villages for over 45 years. Teachers will earn four semester hours of graduate credit through Concordia College. Program participants will have the opportunity to both observe and interact with students and staff at the Chinese Language Village.
