Purpose: To provide a forum for CLTA, CLASS and AATA members and others who are interested in teacher education and professional development for Arabic language teachers to (1) share information and resources and (2) exchange ideas in order to expand teacher training capacity in the United States.
Objectives: Workshop participants will (1) become familiar with different teacher training models and know where to find resources and (2) be able to draft their own plan for teacher development.
Eligibility: CLTA, CLASS, and AATA members and others (1) who have advanced degrees and extensive experience in training teachers and (2) are able to draft their own plan for teacher development are eligible.
Fees: Upon notification of acceptance, workshop participants will submit a $50.00 nonrefundable registration fee.
Benefits: Once selected for participation, workshop participants will be eligible to receive up to $200.00 toward their hotel costs and per diem expenses ($41.00/day for meals). Participants will be required to mail hotel receipt copies after workshop attendance to receive reimbursement.
Application: The registration form will include a one-paragraph statement of purpose that explains how the applicants' participation in this workshop will enhance institutional capacity to provide teacher education in the next two years.
Expected Products: At the end of the workshop, participants will submit (1) the evaluation form and (2) a one-page plan for a potential Arabic or Chinese Language teacher training.
Benefits for STARTALK: (1) dissemination of information and lessons learned from 2007 STARTALK projects, (2) provide professional development opportunity to teacher trainers, (3) enhance the field's capacity for teacher training, and (4) encourage applicants
Benefits for AATA, CLASS and CLTA: Participants will collaborate with STARTALK to provide leadership and professional development to these professional organizations' members.
Benefits for Participants: Participants will (1) learn information and resources available regarding STARTALK and (2) share and exchange ideas in order to provide teacher training in the near future.
