Introduction

In this module you will find a connection to varying Internet sites in which are discussed different aspects of Hispanic Culture, and its presence in the world. It is designed especially for those who wish to know more about the different cultures of the Hispanic world. Obviously, an attempt to encompass every site that deals with Hispanic Culture would be impossible given the very nature of the Internet--a medium of communication in a constant state of flux. This site does not claim to be any more than an introduction to some aspects of Latino cultures in the US, Latin-American as well as Spanish. It is divided into the following sections:

The Media: This refers primarily to the electronic press in Spanish, as well as radio and TV stations. In some links you will find directories organized by country.

Visual Arts: Principally refers to painting and cinema. Many museums have websites with calendars of activities or exhibitions.

Music: This section presents links to sites containing information on a wide variety of musical styles of the Hispanic world. It reflects the great diversity that exists in this field. Some directories present selections organized by country.

Food: Presents the great variety of food in the Spanish-speaking world. Fruits and vegetables that are very familiar to us, such as tomatoes, chocolate, corn and potatoes, originate in Central and South America and were exported to Europe, Asia and the rest of the world by the Spanish. In the Spanish-speaking world, one finds great diversity of cuisine, reflected in the variety of regional terms used by different groups to refer to different foods. For example, in Mexico the word "maiz" (corn) is substitued with "elote" to refer to fresh corn, while in South America (Argentina, Chile, Peru, Urugauay, etc.) the term "choclo" is used. In this section, the links are arranged by country.

Literature: This section is divided by region, beginning with the closest to us: Literature written in the US, then Latin American literature, and finally Spanish literature.

Traditions and Customs: Here we offer a group of websites that present regional cultural information and traditions, such as the Day of the Dead in Mexico and California, and other religious ceremonies and festivals in the Latino world. Also, we include links offering a variety of information about study-abroad programs. These resources may be useful for teachers, counselors and students.
